Mar 2010: Details of Banned Plant Species (DEFRA)

A recent change to Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 gives details of a ban on the sale of particular non-native species.

Specific to Landscape Design several ornamental plant species have recently been added to the list including the following which we have until recently specified:

  • Cotoneaster (various), Cotoneaster bullatus / horizontalis / integrifolius / microphyllus / simonsii
  • Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora
  • False virginia creeper, Parthenocissus inserta
  • Virginia creeper, Parthenocissus quinquefolia
  • Japanese rose, Rosa rugosa

For a full list of species and further information please go to the DEFRA website.

Should these species have been specified on your scheme then alternatives are available dependent on its proposed location. Your landscape contractor should be aware of these changes and would be able to suggest suitable alternative species before placing an order.
