BEA Landscape Design Ltd. was appointed in 2013 to carry out Arboricultural surveys and conceptual & detailed designs for the external of this complex 150 unit housing and public open space (POS) development in Stourbridge, West Midlands.
Tree Surveys were provided for multiple areas including the canal side, river edge and steep sloping wooded areas to inform the demolition and construction works. The development included the demolition of the vast Sunrise Medical building which once dominated this site followed by the deculverting (‘daylighting’) of the river Stour. The practice initially provided conceptual designs for the new river embankments, a new large POS further downstream and a bespoke public art feature using old mill stones found during the excavation works. This was then followed by detailed landscape proposals for both planning and construction.
The practice worked closely with the client (Taylor Wimpey) and Dudley MBC’s Landscape & Conservations Officers to achieve usable and attractive open spaces on these sensitive historic industrial sites.
The works followed on from the design of the externals for the Lion Medical Centre commissioned in 2010.
